Slow Cooker Apple Cider

Ingredients

  • 2 quarts unfiltered apple cider (look for unfiltered apple cider or unfiltered apple juice that contains no added sugar or spices)

  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves

  • 2 cinnamon sticks

  • 1 small orange, sliced

  • 1 teaspoon whole allspice berries (optional)

  • 1” piece fresh ginger, peeled (optional)

  • Bourbon or rum (optional, see cooking notes)

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients — except alcohol — in the slow cooker. Cook on LOW for 3-4 hours. Remove and discard the spices. To make it easier to remove the spices, you can use a large tea ball or cheesecloth tied with a string for everything except the cinnamon sticks. Serve the mulled cider immediately in mugs.

  2. If desired, adults can make it spiked apple cider by pouring a bit of alcohol into a mug, then pouring the hot cider mixture over it.

Cooking Notes

  • Want different flavors? Add or skip various spices or fruits. Adjust the ingredients and amounts to meet your family’s preferences. Try lemon, nutmeg, or star anise.

  • Want sweeter apple cider? Try adding a couple tablespoons of brown sugar, maple syrup, or honey.

  • Want to cook the cider on the stove? Simmer the cider mixture covered over low heat for about 1 hour.
